Key Destinations and Major Cities

Mandalay

Mandalay is the second largest city in Myanmar as well as the former royal residence. In this cultural heart of Myanmar, the timeless tradition of music, dance and theater meets today’s booming energy and the thriving business. The Ayeyarwady River surrounds the metropolis in the west, and Mandalay Hill meets the city in the north. The view from the top of Mandalay Hill is spectacular, especially in the morning when the river glitters in the light of the early sun.

Bagan

Known as the city of four million pagodas, Bagan is one of the richest archaeological sites in Asia. The remains of the ancient city extend over an area of 42 km² and it is filled with more than 2,000 pagodas. The numerous monuments recall an age of former greatness and evidence of the country’s deep-rooted faith in Buddhism.

Inle Lake

Inle Lake is the second largest lake in Myanmar, but the most remarkable for its residents, the Intha. The “People of the Lake” live in wooden and bamboo houses built on stilts right on the water. In addition to their impressive one-legged fishing technique, the families grow vegetables, fruits and everything they need. Witness traditional weavers and silver craftsmiths plying their craft. Inle Lake is utterly serene and has a languid enchanting magic all its own.

Yangon

The former capital Yangon, also known as Rangoon, is Myanmar’s largest city and the most important commercial center of the country. It is the entrance gate to another world for most international visitors. The colonial history and religious tradition makes this city one of the most fascinating and unique places in Southeast Asia. A must-visit is the Shwedagon Pagoda, the heart of Yangon. This significant religious pilgrimage site of the Burmese is also a sublime place of peace and reflection.
